A classic! As you’d expect, mostly honey - though I do have a cookbook from 1969 that I’ll post about after I do the rest of the series.

When I originally posted this, I had no particular association with it, other than that it was my favorite book as a child. Now, though, I will always associate it with my dog who passed away, because it was his favorite story to be read and his favorite movie. RIP, dude, you loved Pooh so much.

An interesting note on the pink sugar, as well - you may notice in this and House on Pooh Corner that the only type of colored icing is pink icing. That’s because for a very long time, the only color of icing available was pink icing. Pink dye historically is made from cochineal, which is an edible dye made from bugs. It’s also in a lot of lipsticks, as well as being used as a clothing dye. The House on Pooh Corner was just on the tail end, no pun intended given Eeyore here, of cochineal being a popular and widely used food additive, so it’s interestingly nostalgic to see the icing color being mentioned so often.

Additionally, I’m guessing the “little cake things” are likely Imperial Cakes, per the National Baker from 1920. I did some searching around in historical archives and a lot of contemporary fictional sources mention “little cakes served with tea” that had pink icing, but this was the closest sounding contemporary recipe I could find at a quick glance that fit the description. They’re small layered cakes filled with apricot jam and dipped in fondant and sound quite lovely, actually - sort of like a less labor intensive petits fours.
